You should plan for important milestones in your career to ensure a successful future.
When we think about careers, we often refer to 5-year plans rather than legacy for life. We do not realize that this concept is what will hinder us on our way of success.
Although not every advice applies to every job, we should set goals for each decade. Focusing on what we want to do within 10 years will help us get ready for the future. According to Natalia Peart, a psychologist at Johns Hopkins University, we should be more proactive in issues related to our careers.
“Don’t wait for someone else to decide your career. Don’t wait until you’re bored or forced to jump to work to find it, ”she said. “You always have to be ready to look for work and be open to future opportunities.”
Below is Natalia’s advice on what to do in every decade:
From 20 to 29 years old
– Become a freelancer, especially in a time when the free economy is growing.
– Find yourself a left-handed job, even when you go to work full-time.
– Buy a website, get the domain name that contains your name.
– Whatever you study, you should practice flexible skills like adaptation, communication, teamwork, resilience and critical thinking.
– Focus on building networks and finding mentors. This is a step that will help you advance in your work over the years.
– Meet new people, interact with different ideas and opinions. Don’t narrow down your worldview.
– Don’t worry if you don’t see prospects on your career path. You don’t need to know every step right now.
From 30 to 39 years old
– Know visionary. This will be a “guideline” for your career, helping you to overcome your mistakes as well as getting better opportunities if you have one.
– Don’t care about your title. It does not define your career.
– Expanding the relationship network over the age of 20 years. Join group meetings and professional seminars.
– Volunteer to stand in the leadership position, participate in events. Build your own brand by presence.
– Even if you pause your work to build a family, keep in touch with your network. This will make it easy to come back later.
From 40 to 50 years old
– Looking at yourself, because this can be a time for a personal or work change.
– Consider new opportunities for additional financial resources or satisfaction of job fun.
– Looking back at the experiences that have been summarized, stringed into their own stories. This will help you build the ego without caring about the existing title.
– Perfect what you want to do.
– Determine the gold field for development and promotion.
– Determine the value you want to bring to others, and start asking yourself what legacy you want to leave for posterity.
– Negotiate about wages, or take note of possible new opportunities. Don’t rely too much on formal assessments.
– Develop a set of records to record the experiences you have achieved each year.
– Keep up-to-date and adapt to trends and changes in your industry, don’t leave yourself obsolete.
– Having knowledge of digital technology. This skill is necessary for all ages.
From 50 to 60 years old
– Learn from others, and teach others with your experience. This will help narrow the gap between generations.
– Enhance your presence by becoming a mentor or director – getting the experience available to your advantage.
– Determine the value of the boss, not just the life of the job.
– Make sure you have the ability to tell a compelling story about yourself, thereby proving your priciness to your boss.
– Focus on the vital benefits of the company. As a result, your value is recognized.
– Focus on your achievements and heritage – things you want people to remember forever after you retire.
– Start planning for retirement, consider whether I want to continue working.
Remember, even though everyone has a unique job, these markers will still affect all of us, without leaving anyone behind. Therefore, we must always learn and cultivate, build and expand communities and networks, focus on big goals, and create our own values to prove our ability to any company or organization.
